Certificate in Spanish Language Studies
The Center for Transcultural Learning offers a Certificate in Spanish Language Studies. This preparatory program exists to bring non-Spanish speakers to a Limited Working Proficiency or S-2/S-2+ on the ILR speaking proficiency scale. Contact hours (375+) in the target language are based on recommendations for hours of study from the British Council.
Courses Offered:
Intensive Spanish 001 – This class begins with vocabulary building exercises and progresses to instruction of targeted language structures through the use of questions, answers, commands, storytelling, and reading activities. Comprehension skills are built through class interaction. (96 contact hours per semester.)
Intensive Spanish 002 – This class is a continuation of Spanish 101. Students refine and expand knowledge gained in previous level and acquire new vocabulary and language structures. Class interaction increases as students build comprehension skills; emphasis on reading and listening helps students increase comprehension in context. (96 contact hours per semester.)
Intensive Spanish 003 – Students continue to build comprehension skills and begin to develop expressive skills. Emphasis on more advanced reading and conversation helps students increase comprehension in context. The use of interactive immersion techniques encourages students interact extensively in the target language. Pre-requisites: Spanish 001, 002, and Spanish in the Workplace. (96 contact hours per semester.)
Intensive Spanish 004 – Students expand comprehension skills and refine expressive skills through participation in conversation and reading activities about more advanced topics. Students continue to interact extensively in the target language as they learn through the use of interactive immersion techniques. Pre-requisites: Spanish 001, 002, and Spanish in the Workplace. (96 contact hours per semester.)
Spanish in the Workplace – Students acquire vocabulary specific to professional settings including healthcare, education, and social services through reading and discussion. They also become familiar with the ethical obligations concerning the skills of semi-bilingual professionals. Class time is divided evenly between activities in the target language and in English. (48 contact hours per semester.)
Theory and Practice of Intercultural Communication – This class is designed to equip students with tools to assess and improve their own level of intercultural communicative competence as well as that of others. Students will learn strategies to improve intercultural communicative competence in the workplace. (32 contact hours per semester.)
Introduction to Culture of Spanish Speakers - This course will introduce students to the diverse Spanish-speaking community and their history and culture. Students will examine values and traditions of the target cultures as well as emerging issues and trends for Spanish-speakers living in the United States. (48 contact hours per semester.)
