Women's basketball
was the first sport to be played at College of Saint Mary. Kathy Barclay began the program in 1967 and was
coach until 1973 when Hall of Fame coach Bob McCabe came on board.
During
his eight seasons at CSM, McCabe went 82-62 and is still the coach with the
most wins in Flames' basketball history.
During his tenure, he coached two other Hall of Famers; Kathy "Tiger"
Thielen and Ann Heller.
From 1982
through 1989, the Flames were coached by John Young, Mary Jo Henderson, Dee Romine,
and Tom Brosnihan, respectively. During those seasons, Romine had the most
success - leading the Flames to a 17-9 record in '84-'85, and a 20-6 record in '85-'86,
thanks to the talents of Sherri Jett and Tanya Wesson.
CSM then suspended
the sport of basketball until 1998 when Chris Young took over - marking the
return of basketball to campus. Shannon Struby then took over in '99-2001, and Jarrod
Olson became coach for two years in '01 - compiling a record of 23-25.
Angie
Kristensen took over as coach in 2002 and had a 71-60 record in four seasons. She also led CSM to the NAIA National Tournament
in 2006, when the Flames recorded a school record 22 wins behind All-American
Chelsea Malone. The Flames finished second in the conference three of the four
years during Kristensen's tenure and lost in the MCAC tournament finals three
times, twice by only one basket.
Kevin
Lein became the 11th coach in the 32-year history of Flames'
basketball in 2006, and the Flames went 21-40 during his two seasons.
In 2008, Chuck Brewer took over the Flames' program - leading them to an 8-22
record in his first season.
