Biography:
I joined the College of Saint Mary faculty in 2004. In addition to
teaching, I enjoy giving talks to community, church, and women's groups on
contemporary spirituality, Catholic social teaching, and the implications of
faith for public life.
Academic Interests:
My goal is to
teach courses in theology and ethics in ways that are transformative for
students— so that courses lead to meaningful and lasting changes in the ways
students interpret, understand, and act in the world long after the courses are
completed. I like to help students identify the knowledge that they bring into
a course, analyze and build upon it, and provide varied opportunities to apply
and challenge their developing knowledge and skills in significant ways.
I have found
that a particularly effective teaching and learning strategy is service-learning.
This is a method of teaching whereby students serve at organizations providing
social service and social action. Through this service, students respond to
community-identified needs while they practice skills and develop knowledge
related to the specific course. Students' community-based experience provides
another "text" to analyze and reflect upon in the course. As Director
of Service-Learning, I work with faculty and students who are engaged in
service-learning as well as facilitate relationships between community
organizations and faculty.
