The Mothers Living and Learning program is
an innovative residential option for single mothers and their children who
would like to pursue a college degree full-time while living on campus. Other
than 10 days in December when the campus is closed for Christmas Break, the
program provides on-campus housing year-round, by contracting to live in the
halls for the fall, spring and summer semesters.
This
program is for women who have up to two children (under the age of 10 by the
mother's graduation year), are dedicated to continuing their education, and are
seeking community living opportunities that recognize they are parents as well
as college students. MLL students are responsible for finding and financing
daycare for their children.
The top
two floors of Walsh underwent a renovation in 2006. The new Mothers Living and
Learning space features:
- A community area with a
computer lab
- Four community bathrooms that
include sinks, tubs, showers and bathtubs
- Two large playrooms
- Four community kitchens
- Two laundry rooms.
24-hour
security is available and each student is given a key to their room, a code for
the community doors and an access card for the elevator.
Along
with all CSM students, MLL residents can take part in the numerous services and
opportunities on CSM's campus. This includes learning
support, tutoring services and career services through our Achievement Center; leadership opportunities though
our Student Leadership and Organizations Office; and counseling services.
Students and their children may also utilize the Lied Fitness Center as long as children are
appropriately supervised.
The MLL
staff is comprised of an Assistant Residence Director for Mothers Living and
Learning who is a full-time professional, and three undergraduate Resident Advisors
(RAs) who provide additional support and coordinate various programs throughout
the year.
MLL
residents are required to attend a monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events,
review policies and create a sense of community. MLL residents may also become
active in the Mother's Activity Council.
