Traditions are very important at
College of Saint Mary. Not only do traditions enhance your experience at
CSM, they also connect you with so many women who have attended CSM and who
have the same experiences as you. Here are just a few of the traditions at
CSM.
CSM Celebration
CSM's "homecoming" weekend is full of
activities for current students, alumnae, family & friends to enjoy. Events
include an annual powder-puff football game and bonfire, art show, awards
banquet and mass - just to name a few.
Graduation
Commencement is a time of celebration
at College of Saint Mary. In December, the college holds a commencement
ceremony, which includes the celebration of Mass and special blessings for
the graduates. Our May commencement events begin with a Baccalaureate
Mass, which includes faculty, staff, student and parent representatives
blessing the graduates. The Honors Convocation that has division and
college awards follows it. At the commencement ceremony the Spirit of
Saint Mary award, the highest honor bestowed by College of Saint Mary, is
presented to a senior for her accomplishments of leadership and service to the
college.
Queen of Hearts
This 60-year-old tradition was created
to recognize students who exemplify character, leadership and service on campus
and in the community. The Queen of Hearts is chosen through a campus-wide
election, with votes coming from students, faculty and staff.
72nd Street Food Fight
The Food Fight is relatively new a
new tradition that began in 2004. Competing with (albeit for a good cause) 3
other businesses located on 72nd St. in Omaha including Travel & Transport
and Blue Cross & Blue Shield. In 2005 First Data Resources and UNO joined
the project to battle hunger and poverty in Omaha. Although CSM's original goal
was 2000 food items, DUO and CSM more than tripled that number. In 2005 we
surpassed our goal of 6,600 items to collect a total of 10,000 items. And the
challenge continues…
Spirit of Service Day
This annual effort encourages all
CSM community members to follow the example of the College's founders, the
Sisters of Mercy, to assist those who need help and serving others. Many of the
College's classes are canceled to allow students to participate, and no student
can be penalized for missing a class to serve. At the end of the day, the
workers gather for a celebratory picnic. CSM faculty, staff and students spend
the day volunteering at various locations in Omaha with projects including
working with children, renovating homes, cleaning parks and working with the
elderly and many others.
Welcome Days:
For a first time college student
moving to campus, the first few days can be a little scary. Where are your
classes? Will you make any friends? What is it like to live away from home?
Welcome Days is designed to help you make a smooth transition to college.
Beginning a few days before classes start, the weekend is full of fun
activities where you will make new friends, learn about college life and get
settled into your new home.
