considered for Federal Aid and/or need-based CSM aid for the next academic
year, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the
Renewal Application (if a returning student) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
New
students must apply and be accepted at CSM to be considered for our
academic scholarships and financial aid.

Aid offers ("award letters") are mailed once CSM receives the
results of your FAFSA application, notification of your official acceptance
to CSM, and other required documentation is complete.
Awarding
typically begins mid March.

Returning
students who are not applying for federal student aid (not completing a
FAFSA), notify the Financial Aid Office of your intent to return for the
upcoming year so your scholarship can be packaged.

the CSM Express Center.

If you
have applied for financial aid and have not received any correspondence
from our office, something may be delaying the process. Please check the following:
- Did you apply for the
correct FAFSA year?
- Did you indicate on the
FAFSA that the results should come to CSM? (Our school code is
002540.)
- If you were selected for
verification, did you send us a signed and dated copy of last year's
federal tax return? Did your parents? We need both
if you are a dependent student. We also need copies of W-2 forms.
- Did you submit all
additional documentation we requested? If not, we can't award
you or release your aid.

1. Read,
complete, and sign the award letter and any other accompanying forms.
2. If you are borrowing
your first Stafford Loan, you will need to select a lender and complete a
Master Promissory Note. An instruction
card to complete this process online will be enclosed with your award
package.
3. If you have borrowed
a Stafford Loan before, it is a good idea to use the same lender to avoid
multiple payments when you leave school. By signing your award letter you are
authorizing us to process the loans for the indicated amount. If you would
like to change the amount, please indicate the adjusted amount on the award
letter.
4. If you will need assistance for summer school, you may want to
reduce the amount you borrow for fall and spring to leave eligibility for
summer.
5. Inform the Financial
Aid Office if you will receive any resources not already listed on your Award
Letter (i.e. veteran benefits, scholarships, etc.).
6. Return one copy of your Award Letter to the Financial Aid Office;
keep the second copy for your records.
7. Prepare to submit signed copies of Federal Tax Returns and W-2
forms to the Financial Aid Office; they will be requested if you are selected
for Verification.
8. If you wish to apply for a credit-based Parent PLUS loan or an
alternative loan through a certain lender, please submit an application
online via that lender's website.
Paper applications are also available in the CSM Express Center.
9. First time Stafford loan borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling. If you are
a transfer student and completed Entrance Loan Counseling at another school,
you do still need to complete this session for our records.
10. Prior to the start of each semester, you will need to validate
your registration by stopping by the Express Center to sign a promissory note
for tuition and fees. If the statement you receive from the Business Office
indicates a balance due, be prepared to make payment arrangements when you
validate.
11. Remember that disbursement of aid is two to three weeks after
classes begin. Bring enough money to school to cover your first month's expenses.
12. To continue receiving financial aid in the future, please review
our Standards
of Academic Progress Policy.
