The Student Development Division is proud of our

commitment to community standards that make the college

a productive and comfortable place for all members to learn and grow. We promote behavior that is respectful of persons and policies/laws, and that recognizes a balance of the rights of individuals and individual's responsibility to the community. To that end we, provide learning experiences for students who are found to be responsible for violating the Student Code of Conduct.  We strive to help students grow into more responsible and community-minded persons. College of Saint Mary provides its students with an environment conducive to the pursuit of knowledge. Such an environment is based upon respect, trust, and integrity among all members of the community.  Caring for the needs of each person, contributing to the development of the whole person, and considering the needs of the college community are important attributes of College of Saint Mary's Student Development Division.

CSM students are both citizens and members of our academic community. A student enrolled at CSM assumes an obligation to conduct herself in a manner compatible with the College's function as an educational institution. Misconduct for which students are subject to discipline range from verbal reprimand to expulsion and referral for prosecution.

To learn more about the code of conduct please refer to:

Student Handbook

The discipline process regarding our Student Code of Conduct and/or our Residence Life Policies are handle through the office of the Assistant Dean of Students.

Students in question can either be asked to meet with the Assistant Dean of Students, or the Peer Review Board

Peer Review Board

PRB is a student run organization whose purpose is to provide learning experiences for students who are found responsible for violating the Student Code of Conduct and/or Residence Life Policies.

At CSM we believe in the student empowerment, efficiency, and educational value of peers handling the community standard issues of students in our community.  As a result, the Peer Review Board handles a variety of community based student judicial issues and the members are called together to meet when the alleged violations occur.

A Peer Review Board Member is a volunteer student who hears and votes on community standard cases involving her peers.  She seeks to advocate, model, and teach proper behavior in accordance with college policies to enhance our community.

Additionally, the student is assuming a position of responsibility that requires strict confidentiality, timeliness, and respect for others regardless of their backgrounds.  Members are also expected to act professionally.

The Peer Review Board is a great service and importance to the CSM community and the Division of Student Development.  The Division of Student Development would like to thank the students who have agreed to serve on the peer review board and for their willingness to work to enhance the quality of our community at CSM

PROCESS FOR APPEAL

APPEAL PROCESS

A student who wishes to appeal the decision of any judicial party must file an "Intent to Appeal" form from the Information Center within two working days after learning the decision. The student will then be permitted up to three working days to prepare and hand deliver a written appeal to the appropriate party. Pending the response to the appeal, the student's status as a student will remain unaltered except in cases where there are reasons relating to the emotional or physical welfare of the student or of others, or reasons involving the safety of persons or property.

GROUNDS FOR APPEAL

The student may appeal only on the following grounds:

3)      Procedural due process

2) Absence of sufficient evidence to support the decision

3) Submission of new evidence.

PLEASE NOTE: The severity of the sanction is not considered an acceptable reason to appeal

An appeal shall not be considered to have been filed properly or timely unless it is specific. Letters must be complete enough so that a personal appearance will not be necessary. However, it is up to the discretion of the hearing party to request the presence of the person(s) filing the appeal. A letter, which merely lists the grounds of appeal without concern for the individual case at hand, may be dismissed as frivolous.

All appeals should be handle within two weeks from the time the Intent to Appeal letter is received.
