Description
Why choose
chemistry?
The clothes we wear; the food we eat; the fossil fuels
we consume; everything we see and touch is an example of a chemical
substance. Much of what makes our life comfortable results from the work
accomplished through chemistry.
The fragrance of a rose, the taste of an apple, the sting of a
bee, the tarnishing of silver, the color of a carrot and the misery of an
allergy can all be unraveled given a knowledge of chemistry and molecular
structure.
Chemistry is the central molecular science. Its scope is
universal. Its raw materials are the very fabric of the world around us, and
its intellectual and material rewards are unrivalled. More than any other
discipline, it is a science of our own invention. With more than 90 known
elements and ever-evolving techniques for chemical synthesis, the
opportunities for designing and making new molecules are almost limitless!
Our chemistry program is designed to develop a student's
understanding of the fundamental concepts in each of the major disciplines of
chemistry (Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry,
Inorganic Chemistry, and Biochemistry). Our faculty members are well trained
and enthusiastic about teaching science. We attempt to instill an in-depth
appreciation of nature and we provide the tools the student needs to
integrate the concepts learned in chemistry with the content of other science
and non-science majors.
The successful student must begin with a curiosity about
nature so that we can help her acquire the knowledge and to develop the
logical thinking, imagination, and patience needed to become a successful
scientist.
