General Background
Jeffrey Keyte, M.D. is a physician, educator, and institutional innovator whose career defies easy categorization. Trained at the University of Chicago and Saint Louis University Medical School, he served as a Navy physician before pivoting to academia — a pivot that turned out to be a calling.
For nearly two decades at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Jeff has built things: a cadaver lab, a physician assistant program, an honors program, a community outreach initiative. He now serves as Assistant Dean for Graduate Health and Professional Studies and, since January 2026, as the institution’s inaugural Chief AI Officer — responsible for translating AI’s rapidly shifting landscape into practical, human-centered applications across a complex academic environment.
His approach to AI is neither evangelical nor dismissive. Trained in systems thinking and clinical reasoning, Jeff evaluates AI tools the same way he evaluates any intervention: does it actually help, for whom, and at what cost? He has deployed AI-powered educational tools — including Phoebe, a physiology tutor backed by a medical vision model — that students actually use.
