OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary (CSM) Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) students were honored during an inauguration ceremony on October 24.
“You are the future of this profession,” said Tara Ruppert, director of the occupational therapy program. “Having watched your work ethic, your drive and your compassion up close, I’m confident that future is in good hands.”
The event recognized occupational therapy students during the fall semester of their second year, the halfway point in the program before they begin the clinical care portion of the curriculum.
“I am so proud of all of you. Watching your growth, humor and heart for this profession has been incredibly rewarding. I know you’ll move this profession forward,” said Ellie Cusic, associate professor of occupational therapy and guest speaker.
Nicole Chipy-Hammack, associate professor of occupational therapy, presided over the ceremony. Occupational therapy students Delaney Volnek and Kylie Bockman offered the reflection.
“Even through all the challenges we’ve faced, and the ones that are still to come, none of us have given up. We show up, we put on a brave face, and we give each day our best,” said ClaireReece Peterson, who was the student speaker. “Plus, we support each other through it all. One of my favorite things about our class is that no one faces anything alone.”
Ruppert presented the students with certificates, led the occupational therapy student oath and gave closing remarks.
“Occupational therapy has a long history of walking alongside people through life-altering moments and helping them return to the things that give their lives meaning,” said Ruppert. “What sets us apart is that we look at the whole person, not only the diagnosis or the range-of-motion measurement. We care for mind, body and spirit. That view fits the mission of College of Saint Mary, and it’s one reason our OT program has been part of this institution for more than three decades.”
CSM’s OTD program helps students develop clinical and research skills, as well as gain knowledge of administration, leadership, program development, policy and advocacy. Students complete two 12-week fieldwork experiences and a 14-week doctoral experience that culminates in a scholarly project.
