CSM hires Schneider as Athletic Director

College of Saint Mary is pleased to announce that Steve Schneider has been hired as athletic director, effective September 8.

The new Flames' athletic administrator comes to CSM from Midland Lutheran College where he served, most recently, as vice president for institutional advancement. Previously, he was director of athletics for 14 years and assistant director of athletics for four years. In addition, he served as head football coach from 1992-2001, quarterback coach from 2005-07, and head softball coach from 1988-92.

Schneider holds a master's degree in health, physical education and recreation with a specialization in exercise science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, along with a bachelor's degree in physical education from Midland Lutheran College with minors in special education, behavioral science and history.

"I'm looking forward to using my experience and knowledge to build, strengthen, and lead the athletic programs at College of Saint Mary," said Schneider. "I'm very excited and honored the college has entrusted me with this important position."

CSM volleyball team recognized by AVCA

The College of Saint Mary volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as one of its AVCA Team Academic Award winners for the 2007/08 season.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992/93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. This year, a record 353 teams earned the award.

With 14 consecutive awards, the CSM volleyball team holds the record for longest overall streak among all National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams.  In addition, CSM's streak of 14-straight awards is the most earned overall by any team.

The CSM Flames volleyball team, under new head coach Jenny Madrid, kicks off its 2008/09 season on August 26 with a home match against Dana College.

Madrid named Flames' volleyball coach & assistant AD

Jenny Madrid has been hired as head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director for the College of Saint Mary. The new Flames' coach comes to CSM from the University of Mary where she served as graduate assistant coach for the volleyball team.

Other past positions include head coach with the Century Volleyball Club in Bismarck, ND, head coach for the Missouri Valley Junior Olympics volleyball team, student assistant coach for the Southwest Baptist University volleyball team, head coach for the 2003 Panamanian Volleyball Federation national team, and camp coordinator/instructor for numerous volleyball camps in the region.

Madrid holds a master's degree in education from the University of Mary, a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southwest Baptist University, and an associate's degree in mass communication from the University of Panama.

In addition to her coaching experience, Madrid has played on numerous volleyball teams throughout her career including the Southwest Baptist University team where she was the team's leading scorer and was named to the All Conference Team. In addition, she was a member of the teams at Texas Woman's University, Hill College, and the Panamanian National Team where she was twice named most valuable player at the national tournament.

Brewer named Flames' hoop coach

Current College of Saint Mary softball coach Chuck Brewer will also be coaching the basketball team next season.  Brewer is in his first year at College of Saint Mary.

The new Flames' coach had a 56-22 record in three years as head basketball coach at Mount Marty College (MMC), and a 20-11 mark at Wayne State.  He is also a veteran of 22 years of high school basketball in South Dakota and Iowa.

Coach Brewer, who has a B.A. in HPER from Mount Marty College, is an inaugural member of the MMC Hall of Fame and still holds several records at MMC including most career points and season scoring average.   He was the NAIA District 12 women's basketball and softball coach of the year in 1993.

Brewer is from Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was the high school boys' basketball leading scorer in 1972.  He has been an athletic director, coach and teacher for 32 years.  Brewer will replace Kevin Lein, who recently resigned as athletic director, sports information director and basketball coach after two years.
