CSM hires Schneider as Athletic Director
College of Saint Mary is pleased to announce that Steve
Schneider has been hired as athletic director, effective September 8.
The new
Flames' athletic administrator comes to CSM from Midland Lutheran College where he served, most recently,
as vice president for institutional advancement. Previously, he was director of
athletics for 14 years and assistant director of athletics for four years. In
addition, he served as head football coach from 1992-2001, quarterback coach
from 2005-07, and head softball coach from 1988-92.
Schneider
holds a master's degree in health, physical education and recreation with a
specialization in exercise science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, along with a bachelor's degree
in physical education from Midland Lutheran College with minors in special education,
behavioral science and history.
"I'm
looking forward to using my experience and knowledge to build, strengthen, and
lead the athletic programs at College of Saint Mary," said Schneider. "I'm very
excited and honored the college has entrusted me with this important position."
CSM volleyball team recognized by AVCA
The College of Saint Mary volleyball team has been
recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as one of its
AVCA Team Academic Award winners for the 2007/08 season.
The
award, which was initiated in the 1992/93 academic year, honors collegiate and
high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during
the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average
on a 4.0 scale. This year, a record 353 teams earned the award.
With 14
consecutive awards, the CSM volleyball team holds the record for longest
overall streak among all National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA) teams. In addition, CSM's streak
of 14-straight awards is the most earned overall by any team.
The CSM
Flames volleyball team, under new head coach Jenny Madrid, kicks off its 2008/09
season on August 26 with a home match against Dana College.

Madrid named Flames' volleyball coach & assistant AD
Jenny
Madrid has been hired as head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director
for the College of Saint Mary. The new Flames' coach comes to
CSM from the University of Mary where she served as graduate
assistant coach for the volleyball team.
Other
past positions include head coach with the Century Volleyball Club in Bismarck, ND, head coach for the Missouri
Valley Junior Olympics volleyball team, student assistant coach for the Southwest Baptist University volleyball team, head coach for
the 2003 Panamanian Volleyball Federation national team, and camp
coordinator/instructor for numerous volleyball camps in the region.
Madrid holds a master's degree in
education from the University of Mary, a bachelor's degree in business administration
from Southwest Baptist University, and an associate's degree in
mass communication from the University of Panama.
In
addition to her coaching experience, Madrid has played on numerous volleyball teams throughout
her career including the Southwest Baptist University team where she was the team's
leading scorer and was named to the All Conference Team. In addition, she was a
member of the teams at Texas Woman's University, Hill College, and the Panamanian National Team
where she was twice named most valuable player at the national tournament.
Brewer named Flames' hoop coach
Current College of Saint Mary softball coach Chuck Brewer will also be coaching the
basketball team next season. Brewer is
in his first year at College of Saint Mary.
The new
Flames' coach had a 56-22 record in three years as head basketball coach at
Mount Marty College (MMC), and a 20-11 mark at Wayne State. He is also a veteran of 22 years of high
school basketball in South Dakota and Iowa.
Coach
Brewer, who has a B.A. in HPER from Mount Marty College, is an inaugural member of the
MMC Hall of Fame and still holds several records at MMC including most career
points and season scoring average. He
was the NAIA District 12 women's basketball and softball coach of the year in
1993.
Brewer is
from Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was the high school
boys' basketball leading scorer in 1972.
He has been an athletic director, coach and teacher for 32 years. Brewer will replace Kevin Lein, who recently resigned
as athletic director, sports information director and basketball coach after
two years.
The
Flames return six players next season including Freshman of the Year Nyahok
Duop and All-MCAC center Angela Jones, as well as adding nine new recruits.
Soccer, Volleyball, Cross
Country...
CSM's three
fall sports will begin the first week in August. Soccer begins August 3, while volleyball and
cross country start on August 10.
Physicals
for all
athletes are August 4 and August 19. No CSM
athlete may practice without a physical.

new recruits will be donning CSM uniforms next year, the most in history. As of July 14, there were 93 athletes to matriculate
