Art professor Jeff Spencer unveils Mind's Eye exhibit Feb. 2

Friday, January 19, 2018

OMAHA, NEB. – Assistant Professor of Art Jeff Spencer will display his acrylic work in the “Mind’s Eye” Art Exhibit this month at College of Saint Mary’s Hillmer Art Gallery. The exhibit, which features more than 15 original paintings, opens on Jan. 22 with a special reception on Friday, Feb. 2 from 5-7:30.

Spencer says his paintings are “a playful interpretation of the figure ground language of early abstract paintings.” This particular collection consists of several acrylic paintings on board and paper.

“It’s about visual problems solving. Coming up with an idea and finding its function,” says Spencer. “Each of my pieces have some sort of movement and I portray that by colors, lines, or shapes.”

Jeff Spencer has served as an assistant professor of art at CSM since 2005. His paintings have been shown nationally and he is also the recipient of the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts studio grant.

“For me, it’s an expression of lifelong image-making,” adds Spencer. “I’m continuing to revisit things that have influenced me my entire life. I think you’ll see that in the paintings on display this month.”

Spencer attended the University of Nebraska Omaha (BFA) and University of Tennessee Knoxville (MFA). His work can be found in collections of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Museum of Art, Metro Community College, and The University of Nebraska at Omaha.

The exhibit will run from Jan. 22 through March 2 and is open to the public.
