CSM Celebrates Inauguration of Heather A. Smith
College of Saint Mary formally welcomed Heather Smith as its eighth president on September 12, 2025—a historic moment alive with promise and possibility.
Held in the heart of campus, the inauguration ceremony marked not only a change in leadership but the continuation of a mission more than a century in the making. The event drew an extraordinary gathering: local and state leaders, presidents and delegates from peer institutions, Archbishop Michael McGovern, members of the Sisters of Mercy, CSM’s Board of Directors, and hundreds of faculty, staff, students, and alumni who came to witness the start of a new era for the university.
“Already I’ve been stunned by the devotion you show this institution every day. I have seen the fire in the eyes of our faculty, our staff, our students, our benefactors, and our volunteers,” Smith shared during her inaugural address. “You have led me to fall in love with College of Saint Mary. I will work to be worthy of your trust in me. I will give everything I have to be worthy of this transforming gift from the Sisters of Mercy.”
The ceremony also honored CSM’s heritage through the presentation of meaningful symbols representing the mission and values that continue to guide the institution. Presented by members of the campus community, these symbols served as both a tribute to the past and a commitment to the future. See below for further explanation of each of the symbols.
With prayer, messages of support from civic and higher education leaders, and the investiture of the presidential medallion, the day marked a new chapter in the college’s proud history.

Presentation of Symbols
The presentation of symbols was designed as a moment to honor our story, our mission, and the people who have shaped both. During the inauguration, members of our campus community stepped forward to present President Heather Smith with symbols representing key elements of that heritage — from the Mercy Cross to the Walking Woman statue, each one carrying its own story and significance. Together, these symbols are a reminder of the values we hold dear, the legacy we inherit, and the charge we embrace: to serve, to lead, and to create opportunity for generations to come.

Former President Maryanne Stevens presents a portrait of CSM founder Mother Leo Gallagher, honoring a century of visionary leadership for women’s education.

The Walking Woman statue, a campus symbol since 1998, represents alumni striding into the world with confidence, courage, and Mercy values.

The seal, rooted in Mercy and Catholic tradition, symbolizes the college's mission to educate in the light of God.

The black shawl symbolizes Mercy’s compassion and CSM’s mission to prepare graduates to lead and care for others.

The teapot and cup symbolize Mercy’s tradition of fostering community, reflecting CSM’s commitment to a supportive, relationship‑centered learning environment.

The Mercy Cross, designed by Catherine McAuley, honors the Sisters of Mercy and their mission at the heart of CSM.

The crown of flowers honors Saint Mary’s servant spirit, reflecting CSM’s commitment to service in our students and community.
