All 10 CSM Teams Earn NAIA Scholar-Team Recognition

Wednesday, July 17, 2019

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary student-athletes continue to get the job done in both the classroom and on the field of play.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that 1,883 teams earned the distinction of NAIA Scholar-Teams for the 2018-19 season and that includes 10 teams from CSM.

All 10 eligible teams from College of Saint Mary earned the honor. Only bowling, which competed as a USBC team this season instead of NAIA, did not make the list. The bowling team, however, did meet all the qualifications to be an NAIA Scholar-Team.

For a team to be considered for the award, it must have a minimum 3.0-grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes on the roster at any time during the academic year.

CSM's indoor track & field team led the way for the Flames with a 3.846 team GPA – which was the top team GPA amongst all women's indoor track and field teams.

Tennis came in second with a 3.695, while cross country was the third-best with a 3.629. Other team GPAs for the Flames were: softball (3.494), competitive dance (3.399), volleyball (3.372), swimming (3.328), golf (3.316), bowling (3.310), soccer (3.295) and basketball (3.248).

"Our student-athletes are outstanding," Director of Athletics Peter Haze Haring said. "Each year all of our teams strive to be the best within their academics and receiving the NAIA team honors is the exclamation point of another wonderful year. Each student-athlete remains focused on a strong commitment to further their education to become an impactful person within the workforce.

"I'm very proud of our student-athletes and staff who remain committed to excellence as we continue to grow Flames Athletics."
