College of Saint Mary launches new biology majors
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary (CSM) launched new biology majors with more specialized offerings that provide broad career opportunities and advanced study options.
The new biology majors open the door for students to pursue their passions, whether it’s protecting the environment, solving crimes through science, exploring life at the molecular level, advancing healthcare or working with animals.
Previously, CSM offered two undergraduate majors, biology and human biology. Now, students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology and choose between seven majors, environmental biology, forensic science, integrative biology, medical laboratory science, molecular biology, pre-health sciences and pre-veterinary.
“Biology is a massive area of study, and we wanted students to be able to have more options through concentrations,” said Amanda Roe, assistant dean of sciences and professional studies. “By increasing choice, students have more freedom to take courses that directly support their career goals while giving them space to explore their interests.”
Integrative biology allows students to pair biology studies with a field of interest, such as psychology, education, health or communications. This flexibility prepares students for careers in science communication, public health, education or research and provides a strong foundation for graduate students. The pre-professional tracks, pre-health and pre-veterinary, prepare students for graduate programs in medicine, pharmacy or veterinary science.
Depending on the field of study, biology careers are expected to grow between 4-35% through 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Students enrolled in CSM’s biology program, learn from expert faculty, gain hands-on experience in labs and in the field, and build the skills graduate schools and employers want most. Students graduate ready to lead, innovate and make a difference in science, healthcare and beyond.
