Tuesday, April 24, 2018

OMAHA, NEB. – College of Saint Mary English Professor, Dr. Amy Knox Brown, is one of just nine writers selected for Nebraska Arts Council’s 2018 Individual Artist Fellowship award in Literature. This prestigious program recognizes exemplary work by Nebraska artists on a three-year rotation between artistic disciplines: Literature, Performing Arts/Filmmaking and Visual Arts.

Dr. Brown says she’s thrilled to receive the award. “I was honored to be recognized among so many other great writers working right here in Nebraska.”

The recipients were selected from a pool of 44 applicants by a panel of peer professionals including Rachel Galvin, University of Chicago; Ben Pfeiffer, Editor-at-large, The Rumpus magazine; Ted Genoways, editor-at-large, OnEarth magazine. A total of $18,000 was divided among the receiving artists.

The $4,000 award is intended to be used to support the artist’s writing in some way. Dr. Brown says she’s finishing up a draft of a novel tentatively titled Terms, which is set in Lincoln in 1983 during the filming of the movie Terms of Endearment and narrated by a college student who has a part as an extra in the movie. Her next project is a historical novel set at Fort Robinson in 1877, where the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse was murdered.

Dr. Brown has worked as Program Director and Professor of English at College of Saint Mary since 2012. She received her Bachelor of Fine arts in Creative Writing from Stephens College, her Master of Arts in English, Juris Doctorate, and Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and she received her MFA in Creative Writing from North Carolina State University.
