OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary (CSM) students and staff volunteered at the Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon July 27 on campus.

Nearly 200 7-14-year-old girls completed the triathlon after spending the summer training for the race using CSM’s facilities and outdoor spaces.

The Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon club is a free program that aims to help girls build self-confidence. During their triathlon training, the girls learn to honor themselves and others, the importance of teamwork and to center kindness.

“Our partnership with the Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon Club aligns with our mission to empower women and inspire positive leadership,” said President Heather Smith. “We hope the girls who participated in the triathlon gained confidence through their accomplishment and were inspired as they spent time on our campus.”

CSM volunteers cheered on the girls and directed them during transitions between sports.

“Witnessing the enthusiasm of the volunteers and other supporters, let alone the energy from the young female athletes, evoked true joy. I don't think I stopped smiling throughout the entire event,” said Maria Main, director of annual giving and events. “From the girls shouting back ‘thank you!’ after hearing your words of encouragement to the parents running alongside their daughter to cheer them on — it was overall an incredible and inspiring experience.”

The Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon has taken place on the CSM campus since its founding in 2018.

“Our partnership with College of Saint Mary is perfect in so many ways and has been instrumental to the success of the Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon Club. From the inception in 2018, CSM has generously opened its campus to our program--from the pool, field and parking lot space to campus facilities,” Ironhawk Juniors Triathlon Club co-founder Michelle Bandur. “This partnership helps create a safe, welcoming environment where girls can train, thrive, grow, and achieve something truly empowering and make meaningful friendships along the way. CSM's support helps us show young female athletes what they’re capable of.”

Since the triathlon club was founded, over 1,000 girls have crossed the finish line after swimming, biking and running. They have taught over 250 girls how to swim and over 200 girls how to ride a bike. They also provide equipment to those who need it, and have given away 200 swimsuits, 300 bikes, 350 helmets and 250 pairs of shoes.
