PA Student Hopes to Make a Difference in Rural Healthcare
Rebecca Meusch
Bellwood, NE
Master of Physician Assistant Studies

Rebecca Meusch understands the importance of preventative healthcare, especially in rural areas. It’s one of the reasons she chose to become a physician assistant.

The Bellwood, Neb., native was raised on a farm and grew up without grandparents. All four died – three from cancer -- when her parents were in their 20s. “It impacted me as I got older,” she said. “You start to realize some of the things you missed out on.”

Rebecca has often thought about the what if. What if her grandparents had received preventative healthcare? Would they still be here? That’s what she wants to offer other families in a rural setting.

“I think every family deserves that. Your family should be one of the most important things in your life,” she said. “It all comes back to providing everyone with a healthy lifestyle and preventative healthcare.”

After receiving her undergraduate degree in biology with a health science minor, Rebecca applied to College of Saint Mary’s Master of Physician Assistant Studies. The program provides the didactic scientific foundation and essential experiences in clinical practice, research and professional services to prepare students for the role of a PA.

While other universities’ programs may be “sink or swim,” Rebecca saw the compassion and caring of CSM’s PA faculty and staff. “They are with you every step of the way and make sure you get where you want to be,” she said. “They want the best for you. I saw that right away when I applied. I was happy that I got in here.”

Rebecca also loved the small, tight-knit community at CSM. “When I first met our director, I was super excited. You feel that connection with some when you first meet them,” she said. “She made me feel welcome.”

As part of her studies, Rebecca must complete 12 clinical rotations. Each one has offered her a glimpse into various specialties. But her choice will likely be family practice in a rural setting. “Hopefully, I can make a difference for people’s families,” she said. “I think everyone deserves to have educated healthcare.”

Rebecca will graduate in August 2023.
