Meet the Heart of the Walking Woman Celebration Finalists

Friday, February 23, 2018

The Heart of the Walking Woman Celebration — which is a tradition at College of Saint Mary — recognizes students who exemplify character, service and leadership on campus. Inductees took some time to reflect on what it means to them to be chosen as a finalist for this prestigious honor. Winners will be chosen during a ceremony on Friday, Feb. 23.

Shabnam WaheedI look back at the past few years I have been so incredibly blessed to enjoy at CSM and the countless times I've come to be amazed by the wit and strength of the women who surround me.  As I continue to grow and venture onto the next journey life holds for me, I look back at the laughter, knowledge and relationships and just revel in thought at how quickly, but beautifully, time has passed by me.

- Shabnam Waheed, fourth-year

Dezirae DelanceyCollege of Saint Mary has blessed me so much throughout my two years of being a student here, as they offer so many opportunities to grow as a student and a leader. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to be a finalist for the Heart of the Walking Woman.

- Dezirae Delancey, second-year

Ashley TagartAs a past Student Senate member, I realize all the time and dedication that is put into this celebration and the traditions that it holds. The two other young ladies who are nominated in my grade are close friends of mine, and I am so lucky to get to stand next to them this Friday. My nomination for this award will always be a cherished accomplishment.

- Ashley Tagart, fourth-year

Kia ScottI’m proud to represent this university in a positive way. For me it’s about making my mark on this place and being a leader on campus.

The Walking Woman is a monument, an example of who I want to become.  Every day, I am blessed I am to be surrounded by such great peers here at CSM: strong and intelligent woman who will make a difference in the world one day. I am truly honored to be a part of this wonderful community that will help me evolve into someone with character, compassion and huge aspirations to create change.

- Marcella Morales, first-year

Miriam (Adriana) Olague CepedaMy nomination as the Heart of the Walking Woman finalist means that all the energy, effort, long nights, heartaches, and laughs are noticed by the people that I am surrounded by at College of Saint Mary. Knowing that somebody notices encourages me to continue doing what I love to do and also encourages me always to strive to be and do my best inside and outside of the CSM community.

Janette GonzalezFirst and foremost, I am humbled by this recognition. However, I feel that this is not about the work I’ve done but the work that others have put into me. Without CSM, my grandma, my parents, family and friends, I would not be the woman I am today.

- Janette Gonzalez, fourth-year

Elaundra NicholsI feel that I am being noticed for the good I do and for being a leader on campus. To me, it also means I am doing the right thing and exemplifying integrity. Being a Walking Woman, I feel, is letting the light inside you shine and being a woman of good character.

- Elaundra Nichols, first-year

Katie GolkaNot only are people seeing things in me but they are also allowing me to reflect on all of the hard work I put in these past years. There are no words to describe how much of an impact the staff, faculty, and students have had on me, and I'm more than grateful to have the opportunity to continue learning, leading, and volunteering amongst such talented women on campus.

- Katie Golka, third-year

Dania Cervantes AyalaBeing a finalist allows me to prove to myself that although I am a first-generation baccalaureate nursing student, I have made an impact on our CSM community as a leader, a student, and most importantly, a woman. College of Saint Mary has provided me with opportunities of growth, allowing me to excel as a woman in this society.
