Pre-Health Fields of Study

Eight Pre-Health interests that will launch your career

Pre-Health field of study at College of Saint Mary

Many careers in healthcare require post-graduate education, asking for candidates with a master's or doctorate degree. But the work starts much sooner than that — the critical foundation is laid during your undergraduate academic career. That's where College of Saint Mary’s pre-health fields of study come into play. These interests are career-specific and are designed to ensure you’re on the correct path towards achieving their goals and aspirations.

CSM is home to several pathways toward high-paying and rewarding healthcare careers. Learn more about how these pre-health interests can lead to successful careers and see for yourself if one of these paths could be the right fit for you.

What is a pre-health field of study?

Pre-health fields of study can serve as a critical foundation to your education. College of Saint Mary offers several pre-health interests that provide a strong science foundation and prepare students to excel in the entrance exams for their chosen fields.

One important thing to remember: a pre-health field of study is not a major (technically). You’ll major at CSM in a degree (such as human biology, biology etc.) that helps you reach the post-graduate health program you’ve set your sights on after earning your undergraduate degree.

For example: If you want to become a pharmacist, you would research various pharmacy programs and learn the prerequisites required to enter post-graduate school. Then work closely with your CSM advisor to ensure you’re on track to meet all the undergraduate course requirements for your major, while also keeping in mind the benchmarks for entrance into pharmacy school.

Macy has always wanted to be a veterinarian.

Macy Homes has always loved animals “I have two dogs – a German shepherd greyhound mix rescue and a Shih Tzu poodle,” she said. I work on cows, horses, dogs and cats,” said Macy, a biology major. She’s also seeking minors in chemistry and business.

She loves the small campus and how the professors know her name. She has found opportunities, both academically and athletically.

Following graduation, Macy plans to attend veterinary school. She’s currently applying to schools, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s program with Iowa State University, Kansas State University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri.
