The Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) program reframed the way Sean Soliva ‘25 thought about leadership and changed the way he leads.
After being laid off from a small community bank in fall 2023, Soliva began looking for leadership development courses. When he found College of Saint Mary (CSM) and spoke to MSOL Program Director Beth Merkel, he knew it was the right step for his career.
“I think of it like the difference between being a home cook and going to culinary school. I already knew how to ‘cook’ as a leader through years of hands-on experience, but I wanted the techniques, the theory and the structure that would help me grow into a stronger and more intentional leader,” he said.
The MSOL program helped Soliva connect his core values to how he leads.
“Empathy, integrity, growth, authenticity and self-awareness are not just words to me. They guide how I show up, how I build trust and how I try to create an environment where people feel valued,” he said. “I think that kind of leadership leads to stronger teams, more creativity, and more resilience.”
Soliva also gained the skills needed to lead through change.
“I’ve come to understand that sustained change requires more than compliance, it requires belief. Belief happens when leaders create an environment where people feel supported and inspired, and I know that will be critical as I continue to take on bigger roles,” he said.
He is now an assistant vice president and branch manager at Rhinebeck Bank in Rhinebeck, NY.
“My role combines business development, community engagement and coaching my team to deliver strong results. I work closely with local businesses and community organizations to build lasting relationships and grow the bank’s presence, while also focusing on developing my team and helping them reach their potential,” Soliva said. “What I enjoy most is leading people, creating opportunities for growth and building trust with the clients and communities we serve.”
The MSOL program is designed for working professionals and can be completed in one or two years online. Students learn how to be an authentic leader, the power of positive influence, ethics, conflict management, strategic thinking and more. Students can also earn a certification in change management.
