George and the Dragon

College of Saint Mary show of St. George and the Dragon promises to keep audience laughing

Sunday, January 22, 2017

College of Saint Mary will present a free showing of “St. George and the Dragon” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. The show features the puppeteering of Mike Horner of the Mesner Puppet Theater.

This fun, family friendly retelling of the traditional tale returns the audience to the legendary time of faraway kingdoms, ferocious dragons and damsels in distress. Set in a chilly mythical kingdom, the tale unfolds as the king and his court try to decide what to do about an earth-shaking and hungry dragon.

Horner, a renowned puppeteer, has been the creative force at Mesner Puppet Theater for the past nine years. He is the company’s assistant artistic director and principal puppeteer, as well as lead puppet builder and designer.

Horner performs in Mesner Puppets’ annual season of shows at the company’s theater in Kansas City, MO and tours nationally and internationally. He has built puppets for other theater productions in Kansas City, including “Shrek the Musical” at the Jewish Community Center and The Oldest Boy” at the Unicorn Theatre.

Horner will also conduct a free workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., giving insights on puppets and puppeteering.
