Pre-Veterinary

Bachelor of Science in Biology

If your goal is to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), College of Saint Mary’s Pre-Veterinary track will help you get there. You’ll build a strong foundation in the biological and chemical sciences, develop hands-on lab and research skills, and gain the knowledge of animal biology and health needed for competitive vet school applications.

What You’ll Learn

  • Anatomy, physiology, and animal health concepts
  • Laboratory and research techniques
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving for clinical and research settings
  • Communication skills to work effectively with animal owners and care teams
  • Preparation for entrance exams like the GRE or VCAT (if required)
     

Your Future in Animal Health

Most graduates continue on to veterinary school to become:

  • Companion animal veterinarians
  • Large animal or livestock veterinarians
  • Wildlife or zoo veterinarians
  • Veterinary specialists (surgery, dermatology, oncology, and more)
     

Others apply their skills in roles like veterinary technician, animal care or shelter manager, wildlife conservation work, animal research, or public health. No matter the path, this program gives you the education and experience to make a real difference in animal health and welfare.

Admissions Requirements 

Admissions Requirements 
  1. Submit your application online—it’s quick and easy!
  2. Send Your Transcripts
    • If you’re a transfer student, send us transcripts from any colleges or universities you’ve attended.
    • You’re considered a transfer student if you’ve completed 12 or more college credit hours with at least a 2.0 GPA.

       

Test-Optional Admissions

You can apply with or without ACT/SAT scores—your choice! Here’s what to know:

  • Not submitting test scores will not hurt your chances for admission or merit scholarships.
  • If you send scores after you’ve been admitted (by March 31), we’ll check if you qualify for a higher merit scholarship.
  • Don’t worry—sending scores later will never reduce or take away a scholarship you already have.

Career Outlook

Veterinarians are in high demand, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting 20% job growth from 2022 to 2032—much faster than average. Pre-Vet graduates who continue on to veterinary school can pursue careers caring for companion animals, livestock, wildlife, or exotics, as well as specialize in areas like surgery, dermatology, or oncology. Those who choose not to immediately attend vet school can work in animal care, conservation, research, public health, or regulatory roles, making an impact on animal health and welfare in a variety of settings.
